Recycling Solution - Industrial Design

This collection is a taken from my university final year project. The brief for the project was to be constructed by myself, so I decided to try redesign the recycling system employed by local councils. The idea was to encourage recycling by making the process effortless; so i needed to make an easy, cost effective, efficient approach.

My attack on the problem was to have an integrated system where recycling bags could be picked up, full, from the kitchen and be left by the kerbside. The system would replace the bulky multiple wheelie-bins from a customers driveway, so needed to cost less than the bins to manufacture. An additional complication would be to make the system look visually attractive to a wide audience, all of whom would have differently styled kitchens.

The final solution I presented was that of a flat packed storage tower, where the height of the individual shelves could be altered to allow for the public’s varied consumption of different recyclables. The trays were to be made from a poly-tarp material, the tower from wood with steel shelves, and as such there would be minimal outlay to begin manufacturing. This project, apart from being marked as first class, secured me an award for highest academic achievement in my year.

Development Gallery

A journey through inception, concepts and development, culminating in the final design. This is not born through sketches, but still renders.

Video Gallery

Throughout the design process videos were produced from the many models that were created.

Evaluation Report

Project evaluation report. This document includes a critique of the designer's knowledge and application of the design process

Research Report

The concept and research report for the product, including a few rough sketches of my presented concepts

Presentation Boards

The final design, captured within a series of presentation boards. These boards formed the designers final presentation of the designs to the 'client'.
The boards are intended to showcase the flexibility of the design, so the solution can be seen alongside a number of different kitchen styles.

Design Journal

This section contains excerpts from the three hundred pages of product development, and is an attempt to encapsulate the entire design progression.

The journal contains sketches, research, printouts, critique, and inspiration taken from different media.
